INVENTORY MAY 2022: AMP HEADS & CABS
Marshall 1974X clone head -
A simple, i.e. volume and tone, 18 watt amp using the Lite IIb circuit, derived from, but not identical to, the Marshall 1974X combo, itself derived from the classic V-front Watkins Dominator! Two inputs, one with a bit more gain. |
Elpico AC88, mid-'60s. These were made by Lee Products (hence the ElPiCo name) and were also made for Sound City and rebadged as the Studio 20. Would you be surprised if I said it puts out about 20 (generous) watts? It has been described elsewhere as "the original lunchbox amp". Three inputs (including "Gram"!) each with volume and master treble and bass give away its original intended use as a small PA amp. From what I can discern, these are exactly the same circuit as the "little green combo" that Macca used in the early days of the Beatles.

Marshall JTM45 clone head - The classic Marshall circuit, based on the tweed Fender Bassman but with a twin KT66 power stage putting out around 33 watts - not 45 - before breakup. Sweet Bluesbreaker tone. Notice that I had it built the right way round with the inputs on the left! My preference because who reads right to left in English?
Fender Bassman 50 watt head, 1971- Although "Silverface" era this has been modified to early '60s AA864 specification and it roars. This will normally be partnered with the blonde 2x12" cabinet pictured here (see details below).
Hiwatt DR504 clone head - Another classic design of valve amp. Townshend-like power, tone and clarity but with the advantage of linked channels like the factory customised Dave Gilmour model. Pictured here with the Celestion-loaded Hiwatt 2x12" speaker cabinet. Miles Platting 100, c.1975 - Vintage British 100 watt valve amp that began life as a PA head but now has the front end rebuilt in Plexi/Super Lead style to better match the original Marshall-like power stage. Pictured here with the Goodmans 12-P loaded 2x12" cabinet and my old SG Custom.
Simms Watts AP 100, c.1971 - Early Mk I version with seven knobs (no presence control) and smooth rexine covering. Smooth, clean valve amp head (unless you drive it to ear-splitting levels!). Two channels, Normal and Bright, linkable with a jumper lead. Great for guitar or bass and a nice platform for effects.
Sound City B100, 1968 - A look inside one of these shows how close they are to the Hiwatt DR103, despite the accusations of DA's penny-pinching. It still carries Partridge transformers and Mullard mustard caps so has the DNA of Dave Reeves earlier designs. Does the B100 sound different to the L100?, you may ask. The component differences are minimal and, IMO, so is the sound. Needless to say it delivers a loud, full sound, ideally into a quartet of Fanes.
